AIRBRUSHES
Red Swan has the widest selection of airbrushes in the Ocala area. A thumbnail description of our most important models follows, but first four important definitions that may influence your selection.
In single action airbrushes fluid flow must be preset. Depressing the finger lever then sprays fluid at that preset rate. In the more versatile double action airbrush the finger lever controls both fluid and air. Pressing down starts air flow, pulling back releases fluid. The farther back the lever is pulled, the more fluid is dispensed.
In external mix airbrushes fluid and air come together outside the gun's barrel. In internal mix airbrushes fluid and air meet inside the gun, resulting in finer atomization.
MAJOR MODELS STOCKED
Paasche VL ... Paasche afficianados call this double-action model the most versatile airbrush in the world. Our VL-Set comes with three head assemblies capable of spraying a wide variety of fluids in lines between 1/32" and 1-1/2."
Paasche H ... The most solidly built single-action model around. Available either as a three nozzle set with an assortment of accessories or as a one nozzle airbrush with no accessories.
Badger 350 ... Single-action, external mix airbrush. Stocked only in a single, general purpose nozzle assembly.
Badger 150 ... Double action, internal mix.
Aztek 220 ... Better described as a miniature sprayer rather than an airbrush. Good for painting fairly broad areas where no detail is required.
Aztek 270 ... Single action, external mix at an economical price point. Comes with three different tips, allowing a wide range of line widths.
Aztek 340 ... Still single action, but internal mix for finer spray. Availability of nine different nozzle assemblies makes it almost as versatile as the double-action Azteks. (You almost certainly won't need all nine; usually two or three suffice.)
Aztek 430 ... Differs only in minor respects from the model 470 listed below. True double-action, internal mix.
Aztek 470 ... Aztek's best airbrush. Double-action, internal mix, Lifetime warranty on body. Can use up to nine different nozzles. (Six are included in their wood case set.) Also available in starter set containing only one nozzle.
Our airbrush department also carries almost any part you may need for the models above, plus a choice of compressors, airbrush paints, frisk film, cleaners, stencil burners, and other airbrush aids, plus many books on airbrushing.
We hold occasional airbrush workshops, but do not offer regular airbrush classes. (In our opinion it's a waste of time to attempt to learn the basics in class; the only route is practice, practice, and still more practice. Only when you can make the tool do what you want it to without stopping to think about it is it time to sit down for a session with an accomplished airbrusher.)
ART BOXES
Choose from finished or unfinished wooden art cases in your choice of sizes, or a wide array of plastic art boxes resembling fishing tackle boxes, but usually of heavier construction. Smaller cases are also available for carrying items such as pencils, erasers, brushes, etc.
ART CLIPBOARDS
Not you ordinary office size, but clipboards on steroids. They're great for toting large art pads. Sizes 13x13, 18x18 and 23x26. Carrying hole included at no extra cost.
BUTCHER TRAYS
They really are what the name implies, even though they are rarely found in butcher shops anymore. Many watercolor painters swear by them as an indispensible accessory.
CANVAS CARRIERS
Not a major item, but we usually have one or two types of carriers for transporting wet canvasses between home and class. (Many table easels also double as canvas carriers.)
CANVAS PLIERS
You don't have to have this special tool, but the job's a lot easier if you do.
COLOR-CORRECTED LIGHTS
Ordinary home lighting distorts color. Color-corrected bulbs don't. It's as simple as that. Available either in bulbs, or in a clamp-on easel light.
CUTTING MATS
Self-healing mats that are a must-have if you do lots of cutting. We carry them in sizes from 5x7 through 24x36.
DRAFTING TABLES
Primarily carried in the ubiquitous 30x42 size, but both smaller and larger are usually available. Somewhat related are portable drawing tables. We carry them in two styles.
DRAWING SUPPLIES
We won't belabor an obvious item like drawing pencils, except to say that you'll find a good selection of the better quality brands in a wide range of degrees and in both open stock and sets. (If pencil degrees throw you, there's an explanation here.)
Additional materials, some of which you're unlikely to find elsewhere in Ocala, include jumbo graphite sticks, square sketch sticks, woodless pencils, a wide selection of willow and stick charcoal, dry cleaning pads, sandpaper pointers, erasers, blending stumps, tortillions, etc.
Artist-grade colored pencils are available in Prismacolor and Polychromos brands in either open stock or sets. The latter are free of the wax bloom that sometimes bedevils colored pencil painters. Several lesser brands (in sets only) are available in grades for everything from young kids to older beginners. (Lest you think colored pencils are just for kids, some colored pencil works sell at prices well into the four figure range, and some have broken the five-figure barrier.)
Add a variety of choices in chalk pastels, pastel pencils, watercolor pencils, watercolor crayons, and oil pastels, and all you have to add is the talent.
EASELS
If you want to spend less than $10.00 for an easel, we have one for you. If you want to spend $650.00 for one, we have that one too. (Guess which one we'd rather sell you.) With a big selection of easel styles, including tabletop models, floor models, many which easily convert to either use, and a few which can tilt to horizontal for watercolor, gessoing, or varnishing, there's an easel to fit your needs and your budget
FRAME POINT DRIVERS
A cousin of staple guns, they shoot arrow-shaped metal points into a frame to hold the artwork in place. Once a staple of professional framers only, now there are a couple of choices for amateurs and semi-pros,
HEAD MAGNIFIERS
It's not a way to become a big head, but a fits-on-the-head magnifier for those too-small projects, but don't expect to work at arm's length. For the intense magnification required, the focal point is very close. (Discontinued as of late 2007; we kept the entry to warn you about the close focal point, a reality which killed most sales.)
LIGHT BOXES
Available in a variety of sizes , light boxes make tracing a snap. Our largest stock model has an 11x18 viewing area, but even larger sizes can be special ordered.
MARKERS
We carry Prismacolor and Tombow double-ended professonal art markers (more than 140 colors in the former, 96 in the latter, two brands of paint markers, and a big selection of general-use markers.
MAT CUTTERS
Since we cut thousands of mats every year, we hate to admit how easy it can be with the right equipment. We won't include hand cutters in that category, but if your mat cutting needs are relatively minimal, you can get by nicely with one of the several hand models we carry. For more ambitious projects we can also supply models with a guide rail, adjustable border stop, and additional bells and whistles.
OPAQUE PROJECTORS
We'll start by warning you bluntly that it's our impression that perhaps half the people who buy these devices aren't happy with them. That is rarely the fault of the projector, but more often because of unrealistically high expectations. We'll also warn you that projectors are one of a handful of items that can be returned only for exchange for other merchandise, not for cash. With that said, we'll tell you that we carry projectors in a variety of price ranges. The major differences between models are (1) size of viewing area and (2) what wattage bulb (or bulbs) can be accomodated. The latter is especially important, particularly if high magnification is desired. (Even the weakest model can handle 2X magnification well, but as demand increases, so does the wattage required for clarity of image.) If you do decide to buy a projector here, talk to one of our most experienced people and let us know your expectations. Unless it's such a slow day that we may be tempted to interest you in some Everglades property, we'd rather talk you out of the sale than have you unhappy.
PAINTING KNIVES
It should be enough to say that we have about any size or shape that's made, but for the benefit of beginners we'll add that painting knives are for applying paint to the art's surface, while palette knives are for mixing colors. The distinction is trivial, but you may as well get it right.
PALETTE BOXES
More a necessity than a convenience, these airtight boxes are designed to hold a 12x16 palette (or 12x16 palette paper). Properly used, they vastly extend the life of any unused paint on your palette. The models for acrylics include a box-sized sponge which retains moisture, plus specially treated palette paper. Either will pay for itself many times over by reducing the amount of paint you throw away.
PALETTES - OIL OR ACRYLIC
The picture of an artist standing before a painting and holding a large, somewhat oval palette is deeply ingrained in the public mind, but is increasingly rare today. Now most easel painters shun palettes in favor of pads of treated paper which allow the top sheet to be discarded at the end of a painting session. If tradition is your passion we can still provide the genuine article in a variety of sizes, shapes, and materials, but for most, the disposable palette pad makes up in convenience whatever it lacks in show.
PALETTES - WATERCOLOR
Perhaps an expert watercolorist could create a masterpiece using the dinky, topless palettes (that are really intended for kids), but we don't know of any who would try. Anyone aspiring to watercolor prowess just about has to have a covered palette with many mixing wells around a much larger center area for washes. (The lid, when inverted, becomes a second area for this purpose.) And sometimes it seems that every watercolor painter in the world has designed some variation of that basic style and attached his name to it. Any of the full-sized ones will work, so you can make your choice from the several that we carry.
PATTERN SCISSORS
Create deckle edges on any paper with these clever gadgets. We have a few other patterns, but the only ones we'll reorder are the deckle edgers.
RULING PEN
It's been years since anyone bought this gadget for its designed purpose, drawing lines, but we still sell a few as applicators for liquid frisket. If you've been ruining decent brushes in frisket, you may want to give the ruling pen a try.
STENCIL BURNERS
An almost essential tool for the airbrush artist, Wall Lenk stencil burners make fast work of cutting out frisk film.
TECHNICAL PENS
Rapidographs by Koh-I-Noor are normally carried in sizes 4/0 through size 2, excluding the two half-sizes. Replacement nibs are in the same range. Larger and smaller sizes are by special order only.
WATERCOLOR BOARDS
Unless you paint exclusively on watercolor blocks or on the heaviest papers, you'll need something on which you can tape or staple your paper. Options include The Incredible Art Board, available in half-sheet for full-sheet sizes, and Artmate Watercolor Board in three sizes. For smaller sheets you can also use Gessoed Masonite. Most recently we have added a variety of sizes and two thicknesses of Gatorboard.
ZIGGENWINDERS
As far as we know there's no such thing. We were just feeling frisky after finally reaching the end of a seemingly interminable page.
