ACID-FREE TISSUE
An archival tissue used for wrapping and storing art works to guard against acid-migration and abrasion, it comes in 30" x 40" sheets in packs of twelve sheets.
ARMATURE WIRE
No, it's not the electrical kind, but the aluminum wire used for reinforcing clay figures. Choose from three exciting thicknesses. (Our sarcasm is showing. Almost every new product we are offered is described as "exciting," evidently by the sort of people who get excited watching grass grow.)
ART AEROSOLS
Available in Blair, Grumbacher, Krylon, and Winsor & Newton, Whatever the surface effect you want or the surface you're coating, there's a spray in stock for you. (Since they're all clears, you can also use them for invisible graffiti.) Fitting loosely in the art aerosol category are glass stain sprays, webbing sprays, glitter sprays, and a variety of spray adhesives.
BARRIER PAPER
Acid-Free 32" x 40" sheets used in framing or for storing valuable works of art.
BLOCK PRINTING SUPPLIES
Carve your design on linoleum or on the new, easier-to-cut alternatives, then print them out with Speedball water-base block inks (or with the soft blocks use any of the inkpads favored by rubber stampers. A wide choice of brayers will help ensure that the design transfers completely. (Brayers aren't jackasses, a position we sometimes fill here, but rather rollers used to put pressure on the transferring pattern. They're available in several widths and degrees of hardness.)
CALLIGRAPHY SUPPLIES
Stock items include cartridge pens available with single or multiple nibs, dip-type Speedball™ disposable nibs and holders, felt-tip calligraphy markers, practice pads, books, parchment and vellum papers, underliner sheets, and a rainbow of colors in calligraphy inks.
CLAYS, SCULPTING SUPPLIES
We do not carry kilns, pottery wheels, or clays and glazes for firing. We have nearly everything else, including air-dry clays in a variety of sizes and brands, Sculpey and Premo polymer clays, pottery tools and tool kits, and mold-making and casting supplies.
CLEAR ART BAGS
Designed to protect unframed art from unfriendly touches, these transparent bags come with a self-sealing closure in nominal sizes 4x6 5x7,8x10, 9x12, 11x14, 14x18,16x20, 18x24, and 20x24. They're easily modified to accomodate intermediate sizes and are just the right thickness for matted artwork plus a foamboard backer.
CORK
Available in 2'x3'x1/4" rolls.
DRAWING BOARDS
Conventional wood drawing boards are not a hot item in the computer era, but we still carry a few sizes. More in demand are melamine-surfaced portable drawing boards with folding legs for inclining the board at a handy angle. We carry them in 20"x26" and 23"x31" sizes.
GRAPHICS SUPPLIES
Manufacturers of rub-down lettering are mostly either gone or on life support because of the computer, but we still have a few of the simpler fonts. Self-adhesive vinyl letters are also on the endangered species list, but we still have them from 1/4" to 6" in a choice of colors. For several of these we also have lower case sets as well as caps. Lettering guides and oilboard stencils are still alive and well, and we have several sizes in the former, and nine sizes ranging from 1" through 12" in the latter.
INKS
You'll find drawing inks and calligraphy inks from Winsor & Newton, Higgins inks for pen, brush, or tech pen, Koh-I-Noor Rapidograph ink (black only), and refill cartridges for Sheaffer and Osmiroid calligraphy pens. We also carry oriental ink sticks in black, or sets of colors for use in Sumi and Sumi-E painting. Fairly new in stock is F. W. Acrylic Ink from Daler-Rowney.
MEDIUMS & ADDITIVES
Technically there is a distinction between the two terms, but for our purposes we will treat both simply as anything which alters the properties of a paint. It's enough to say here that regardless what type of paint you use, you'll find a full selection of mediums and additives in stock. For availability information our Artist Colors page has links to take you to listings appropriate to your medium.
METAL PRODUCTS
The solid stuff comes in 12" x 30" ultra-thin rolls of brass, aluminum, copper, or stainless steel. The Peek-a-Boo, see-through variety is expanded diamond-mesh aluminum (sheets or rolls) in several different mesh sizes. Both have lots of art or craft uses.
MOSAIC SUPPLIES
Contrary to prevailing opinion, mosaics are perhaps the simplest of all art forms to create. The author of these pages, who is almost utterly devoid of artistic talent, turned out a very acceptable mosaic rendition of our Red Swan logo, so truly anyone can do it. The product of choice for all but the fanciest mosaics are vitreous glass tiles, and we have them in a hundred-zillion colors (we never exaggerate, but we do fib occasionally). Look them over next time you're in. We'll even show you our next no-talent work in progress.
PAINT-BY-NUMBERS
We're told that many art supply stores refuse to carry paint by numbers sets, deeming them unartistic. We aren't so stuffy, and have an enormous selection, with choices for both children and adults. Be sure to check out the Dimensions line, the highest quality we have seen yet.
PALETTE CUPS
Not even our disordered imagination can think of a way to make them an exciting product. For the uninitiated, they're recepticles which clip onto a palette and hold medium or thinner. Adopting the terminology so prevalent in modern marketing (where the word small is unknown), we'll say we have them in medium, large, and extra-large.
PANTOGRAPHS
Not a way to measure trouser length, but an instrument that allows a drawing to be enlarged or reduced through mechanical means. They're in limited demand these days, but you can find them here.
PHOTO-COLORING SUPPLIES
This group includes both Marshall Photo-Coloring Oils and the same firm's Photo-Coloring Pencils. Both are available only in sets.
PICTURE LIGHTS
Now available again (we lost our original supplier) in a wide variety of styles, colors, and sizes.
PORTFOLIO CASES
(Carrying cases without page inserts) Take your choice of nylon, vinyl, genuine leather, or economical treated fiberboard in a wide range of sizes. Sizes vary somewhat according to brand, but most run from 14x18 to 23x36. Sizes to 31x42 available in some lines. See also presentation cases directly below.
PRESENTATION CASES
Available in two grades of leather-look vinyl these cases include a built-in ring binder and page protector inserts. Sizes range from 9x12 through 18x24. Insert count varies with brand, but we carry extras. Also available are presentation books consisting of page protectors bound in lightweight covers. Maximum size on these is 14x17.
REDUCING GLASS
It's the opposite of a magnifying glass. A few artists swear by them as a means to compress a view so as to get a glimpse of overall effect. Not many, though, and if you find us with more than one or two we have over-ordered. If they'd help people reduce we could sell hundreds.
RULERS
Even if you tell us you can't draw a straight line with one, they're still handy to have around. On our greedier days we suggest one of every size, which means from 6" to 60" with lots of stops along the way. Regular or non-slip varieties in your choice of basic wood, space-age plastic, classic steel, or high-fashion aluminum. (Who says we can't romanticize so simple an object?)
SIGNS - READY MADE
Nothing very exotic here, just the run-of-the-mill "For Sale," "Beware of Dog," "Garage Sale," etc.
SILK PAINTS
You'll find Jacquards liquid dyes for silk or wool here, along with gutta resist and setting solution.
SUZURI STONES
The traditional implement for preparing oriental stick inks. Try to find this item anywhere else within 75 miles!
TAPES
We're talking the sticky kind, not the VCR or measuring varieties. Included are drafting tape, acid-free artist tape, packing tapes, the whole family of 3M's Scotch tapes, and those super-skinny crepe tapes that are getting more and more difficult to locate.
T-SQUARES
Another item that's been slammed by computers, but keeps hanging in there. Choice of wood, metal, or plastic (but not all sizes in all three).
WOOD BURNERS
Carried in a kid's grade from National Science, and more serious models from Wall Lenk. A buying tip: The higher the rated temperature, the better the tool.
WOOD PRODUCTS
We'll never be mistaken for a lumber yard, but wood products available include balsa (sheets, strips, and blocks, as well as laminated "build-on boards" for model assembly), basswood (carving blocks and a limited range of sheets), dowels, and a few wood plates and plaques for carving or woodburning.
